ENSEMBLE OFFRANDES
SECOND BOOK OF MADRIGALS

Following on from a first Book of Madrigals (2020-2021), already inspired by the poems of Dino Campana, this Second Book explores the theatricality of voices and bodies based on this literally hallucinatory poetry. It is also an exploration of the madrigal tradition, of the interplay of one, two, three, four or five voices – here interwoven with an electroacoustic voice developed by Christophe Havard. The latter, incorporating both interviews with the team and recordings from elsewhere, creates an ‘echo chamber’ for the polyphonic assaults of the five a cappella voices.

GENARÍN

Genarín is undoubtedly a fine example of an anti-hero: a drunken pedlar leading a far from virtuous life, he was run over in 1929 by a refuse lorry in the city of León (in north-western Spain). Yet he was soon carried in procession during the counter-processions of Holy Week, on the initiative of a few of his rowdy comrades, much to the chagrin of León’s conservative bourgeoisie.
The figure of Genarín, at the heart of Martin Moulin’s new mystery novel (based on Julio Llamazares’ The Burial of Genarín), also offers an opportunity to delve once more into those rituals that seem to date back to the dawn of time and which have not entirely disappeared from our globalised Europe. Ultimately, it is a way of reading history as a gigantic palimpsest, where one era never quite entirely supplants another, and where memory and remembrance constantly make us beings of multi-temporality.
This production is accompanied by a feature-length film directed by David Ayoun. Over the course of several years, the filmmaker documented Genarín’s long journey to maturity in France and Spain. David Ayoun’s film is due to be released in 2027, following the French and Spanish premieres of Genarín.
